Aim

The aims of this activity are to:

  • monitor implementation of the legislative changes to allow the sale of low-THC hemp seeds as food
  • identify the issues that need resolving to successfully implement changes to the Food Standards Code.

The Food Regulation Standing Committee was the lead for this work.

Authorisation

At the April 2017 meeting, ,  food ministers supported establishing an implementation and monitoring group for low-THC hemp seeds sold as food.

Status

A survey of low-THC hemp seed food in Australia and New Zealand was completed between 2019 – 2021.

Australian states and territories and New Zealand food authorities will continue to monitor the compliance of low-THC hemp food products in the marketplace. They will act as needed in line with routine surveillance and compliance activities
