Monitor low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) hemp as food

This activity will monitor the process to allow the sale of hemp seed food and identify any compliance or implementation issues.

Aim

The aims of this activity are to:

  • monitor implementation of the legislative changes to allow the sale of low-THC hemp seeds as food
  • identify the issues that need resolving to successfully implement changes to the Food Standards Code.

Leads

The Food Regulation Standing Committee has set up a working group to undertake this work.

Authorisation

The April 2017 meeting of the food ministers.

Status

A survey of low-THC hemp seed food was completed through the Coordinated Food Survey Plan.

Australian states and territories and New Zealand food authorities will continue to monitor the compliance of low-THC hemp food products in the market place. They will take action as needed.
