Explore options and partnerships to strengthen restrictions on advertising of unhealthy foods and drinks to children.

Leads

The lead for this activity is the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

Authorisation

The food ministers agreed at their August 2019 meeting to a program of activities to help reduce chronic disease related to overweight and obesity.

Status

This activity is on hold while the Australian Government undertakes a feasibility study on options to limit marketing of unhealthy foods to children.

The study includes review of: 

  • literature on children’s current exposure to advertising and marketing of unhealthy foods and drinks
  • international approaches
  • current regulatory mechanisms.

The study will provide a better understanding of the options available to limit such marketing.
