About the consultation

We are reviewing the Food Regulation Agreement (FRA). This agreement provides a foundation for the food regulation system and outlines its role, aims and governance.

We are seeking your thoughts on proposed aspirations and high-level actions for the system.

Why we are consulting

In November 2019, the food ministers endorsed a plan to reform the food regulation system to ensure it stays strong, robust and agile. We (the Food Regulation Standing Committee) are leading the work on this plan.

A key part of the plan is a 2-stage review of the FRA:

  • Stage 1 – describe a vision for the food regulatory system to provide strategic direction
  • Stage 2 – review the FRA to create a new foundational document

This consultation will help us to complete stage 1.

Outcomes

We will share submissions, where appropriate, with the government agencies and consultants who are working on related projects.

Consultation report update

On 14 May 2021, the food ministers:

The report presented information from the submissions. It did not include information identifying businesses or organisations unless they agreed to it.

Aspirations update

On 25 November 2022, the ministers endorsed the Aspirations for the food regulatory system.

On 28 July 2023, the ministers endorsed amendments to the Aspirations for the food regulatory system to better recognise Indigenous peoples and culture as part of the food system.
