We are seeking your thoughts on proposed aspirations and high-level actions for the system.

Have your say
Submissions were made on the consultation page of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Consultation Hub.
Why we are consulting
In November 2019, the food ministers endorsed a plan to reform the food regulation system to ensure it stays strong, robust and agile. We (the Food Regulation Standing Committee) are leading the work on this plan.
A key part of the plan is a 2-stage review of the FRA:
- Stage 1 – describe a vision for the food regulatory system to provide strategic direction
- Stage 2 – review the FRA to create a new foundational document
This consultation will help us to complete stage 1.
Outcomes
We will share submissions, where appropriate, with the government agencies and consultants who are working on related projects.
The outcomes of this consultation will feed into the second stage of the FRA review to:
- clearly set out the aims, scope and operating environment for the system
- provide strategic direction for other reform initiatives, such as the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 review.
Consultation report update
On 14 May 2021, the food ministers:
- endorsed the report on the aspirations for the food regulatory system
- adopted the aspirations in the report as draft.
The report presented information from the submissions. It did not include information identifying businesses or organisations unless they agreed to it.
Aspirations update
On 25 November 2022, the ministers endorsed the Aspirations for the food regulatory system.
On 28 July 2023, the ministers endorsed amendments to the Aspirations for the food regulatory system to better recognise Indigenous peoples and culture as part of the food system.
