About the consultation

As part of the activity to review the FSANZ Act, a draft regulatory impact statement has been developed.

This statement looks at ways the Australian Government can reform the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991.

This consultation is seeking your views on the 3 options in the statement:

  • Option 1 is the status quo with no legislative changes to the FSANZ Act.
  • Options 2 and 3 present increasingly ambitious measures to amend the FSANZ Act.

You can share:

  • what you think the impacts of the proposed options would be
  • how you think these options align with the draft aspirations of the food regulation system.

To find out more about the options and the draft aspirations, visit the consultation page.

This consultation is open to everyone.

The options do not represent the positions of the Australian and New Zealand governments.

Have your say

Submissions were made on the consultation page of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Consultation Hub.

Why the government is consulting

In November 2019, the food ministers endorsed an ambitious plan to reform the joint food regulation system to keep it strong, robust and agile.

The FSANZ Act review supports this reform agenda. The review started in July 2020 and includes a comprehensive examination of the:

  • effectiveness of the FSANZ Act
  • related operations and responsibilities of FSANZ.

Outcomes

The Australian Government will analyse the submissions to inform a final regulatory impact statement. This will inform any changes to the FSANZ Act.
